As a Prospective Inter Country adopter you need to be aware that adopting a child from overseas is a costly and lengthy process. Example of some of the costs involved includes - paying a fee for the Home Study Assessment, costs of translating documents and legal fees. You will need to accept that it may be a long time from you being approved as being suitable to adopt and having a child from overseas placed for adoption with you and it cannot be guaranteed that you will be chosen for a child by the overseas authorities.
Each country overseas has its own procedures for placing children with UK approved adopters. Before embarking on overseas adoption, it will be helpful for you as a potential overseas adopter, to discuss with the Agency the procedures in your country of choice. It will also be helpful for you to receive advice from the Agency about the legal status of any Adoption Order which is granted overseas. Some of these are not legally accepted in the UK and it will be therefore necessary to adopt the child in the UK Courts.
Following Approval As Suitable To Adopt
When the Agency has approved you as suitable to adopt a child from overseas all relevant documents are forwarded to the Department for Education (known as DFE), the Central Authority for Inter Country Adoption in the UK.
DFE will then usually issue a Certificate of Eligibility to you and inform you about the necessary translation and notarisation of documents in preparation for them to be sent overseas.
DFE will also require any updates of documents required in the future by the specific country overseas and will liaise with Yorkshire Adoption Agency, as any information is received about your country of choice.
Following A Child Being Identified Overseas For You As An Approved Adopter
DFE will forward information received from overseas about the child to Yorkshire Adoption Agency and we will share this with you. If you wish to proceed with the adoption of the identified child we will confirm this with DFE and advise you about the specific action you will need to take to legally complete your child’s adoption. This will depend on the country from which you are adopting your child.
Full information is contained within our Inter Country Adoption booklet which can downloaded by clicking on the link or by contacting the Agency.
