Yorkshire Adoption Agency is proud of our holistic approach to the adoption assessment process and provides you with training in person, virtually and by video recording.
All of our training is available to our families both pre and post adoption, which means you can come back to refresh or train in something new. We offer a mix of mandatory and optional modules covering more specific areas in meeting children’s needs.
REAL (Resilient, Empathetic, Accepting & Loving) 3-day core training
This course helps to prepare you for adopting a child who may have suffered neglect and abuse. It encompasses not only our in-house approach but also explores the principles of Theraplay® and PACE; and includes a ‘hands-on’ workshop, giving you the opportunity to practice your new skills. Learning is provided on how to ensure good self-care is achieved, the importance of using an informed support network and what support their adopted child can access.

- child development
- maintaining relationships with birth families
- life story work
- parenting teenagers
- parenting a child with additional needs
- family & friends training- basic
- post approval training
- parenting children 4+ (mandatory if adopting children 4+)
- parenting brothers & sisters (mandatory if adopting siblings)
- Early Permanence Placements (EPP) (mandatory if adopting via EPP)
- Dogs Trust (mandatory if you have a dog)
Optional modules:
- mental health awareness
- emotionally supporting & managing the behaviour of your adopted child
- educational issues
- family & friends training- therapeutic
- FASD & substance misuse
- multicultural placements
- digital safeguarding
- paediatric first aid (offered by Mini First Aid)
We are also specialists in Inter Country Adoption (ICA) and provide a separate 3-day core training course for these prospective adopters, tailored to their needs.
