The adoption assessment is often the most daunting part of the process — but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

Families regularly tell us they’re worried about “being judged” or “saying the wrong thing.” In reality, the adoption assessment is designed to be a supportive, reflective process, not an exam.

What is an adoption assessment?

Sometimes called a home study or PAR, the adoption assessment looks at your life experiences, relationships, values, and ability to offer a safe, nurturing home to a child and supports you to reflect on adoption and the children that need adoptive homes helping you come to a better understanding of the children you could parent.

It takes time because it matters — but you are not expected to be perfect.

What social workers are really looking for

Adoption social workers aren’t searching for an ideal family. They are looking for:

  • emotional openness and empathy
  • the ability to reflect and learn
  • resilience and support networks
  • a genuine commitment to a child’s wellbeing

One of our social worker’s puts it simply:

“Assessment isn’t about finding faults — it’s about understanding who you are and how we can support you to become the best parent you can be.”

Support throughout the process

At YAA, assessment is something we do with you, not to you.

Families are supported through preparation training (training page link), regular conversations, and honest discussions — all designed to prepare you fully for adoption.
