One of the most important stages of adoption is matching a child with the right family. This process is thoughtful, ethical, and always centred around the child’s long‑term needs.

How matching works

At YAA, matching is about finding the right family for a child. We consider the wishes of our prospective adopters and consider children waiting for adoption both locally and across the UK that could be a good match.

Social workers carefully consider:

  • the child’s experiences and needs
  • the strengths and circumstances of prospective adopters
  • what support will help the placement succeed

Families are fully involved in these discussions and supported to reflect honestly on what they can offer.

What is adoption panel?

Adoption panel can sound intimidating, but it plays a vital safeguarding role. Panels are made up of experienced, independent professionals who ensure decisions are:

  • thorough
  • fair
  • child‑focused

Panels don’t make decisions lightly — and neither do the teams preparing families for this stage.

While your YAA Adoption Panel will be done virtually, Matching Panel may be done in person or virtually, depending on the local authority’s preference.

Information about the match will be shared with the Panel members and you may be asked a few questions by Panel, that are focused around the match. These questions are sometimes given in advance or asked on the day, either way your social worker will support you to make sure you are prepared.

The Agency Decision is usually given around two weeks after your Panel meeting and then Introductions will begin.

Families often tell us afterwards that panel felt far more supportive and welcoming than they expected.
