All children sometimes struggle with learning new things but children who have learning difficulties can find things even more challenging. With this in mind at the start of the new school term, we thought we would share some useful apps to support your child’s education.
Autistic Learners
- Sight Words provides a comprehensive sequence of teaching activities, techniques, and materials for one of the building blocks of early child literacy.
- Autism iHelp has been developed by the parents of a child with Autism and a speech-language pathologist.
- Speech with Milo is a fun and interactive app that allows a child to build vocabulary skills while addressing sentence construction and length.
Dyslexic Learners
- Dyslexia Quest is a game-based quest designed to help assess your child’s memory and listening skills. It identifies strengths and weaknesses in: working memory, phonological awareness, processing speed, visual sequential order, auditory sequential memory, and visual memory.
- DDs Dictionary allows the independent discovery of an unknown spelling or a quick check of an uncertain word.
- Dyslexia Gold have fun, effective & unique programs helping children learn to improve: Reading with Engaging Eyes, Fluency Builder, Master Spelling and Times Tables.
Writing Difficulties
- Word Magic is an excellent application for kids to have fun with words and their spellings and learn them.
- The Writing Machine introduces how one picture and one word go together. From this foundation, your child will begin to understand additional pre-literacy concepts including how to read text from left to right and to tell words from letters.
- Letter School is the alphabet learning app you wished you had when you were a child! It is a beautifully designed handwriting app that will teach your children how to write letters (both upper and lower case) and numbers (from 1 to 10) in an animated and fun way.
Visual Impairment
- ViA by Braille Institute has been designed to help identify apps that are useful for adults and children who are blind or have low vision, including those with additional disabilities.
- Tap Tap See allows you to take a photo using your iPhone camera, at any angle and hear the description of the object read back to you. The app also includes an auto-focus notification, barcode reader, rotor reader, and sharing options.
- Colour Inspector is just what you need if you have trouble distinguishing between different colors, due to colorblindness or another visual impairment.
