Yorkshire Adoption Agency Launch a collaborative project working with Local Black communities raising awareness of adoption.
Did you know that Black children, especially Black boys wait longer for adoption than any other group and are more likely to never find an adoptive family, spending their life in care?
Yorkshire Adoption Agency are determined to spread the word about the needs of our adopted children and to reach out to our African and Caribbean communities.
Sue May, CEO of YAA says
“We know our African and Caribbean communities are passionate about supporting children, after all the saying ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ originated in Africa. We want to break down the barriers to adoption by having big conversations with as many people as possible.”
Black His
tory Month this year focusses on reclaiming narratives through telling our shared history reflecting the voice and experience of black men and women. Yorkshire Adoption Agency wish to make sure the voice of our local black communities is heard through listening and working in partnership.

YAA are proud to be joining the celebrations for Black History Month hosted by CAST Doncaster in collaboration with the Black Minority Ethnics United Doncaster (BMEUD). This amazing event takes place on Saturday, 19th October 2024 from 3.00pm to 7.00pm. We will have a stall there and hope to have some great conversations.
This will form the launch of a new project in partnership with Sheffield and District African and Caribbean Community Association (SADACCA). A specialist worker will be employed at YAA to engage with local communities, spreading the word about adoption and supporting applicants through every stage of their journey.
The Chair of the Board of Trustees, Ray Powell is himself a prominent member of our local black community and a retired president of the National Black Police Officer’s Association.
Ray comments
“It is a travesty that black children in need of a loving family may never be matched with an adoptive family and as a result spend their life in care. We are passionate about finding loving homes for all our children and will continue to work to spread the word about adoption.”
