Hi, I am Carl and I started my journey of adoption all the way back in 2017.

From the first phone call giving me some information about the process and the agency, right through to the last official visit, post adoption, Yorkshire Adoption Agency (YAA) have done nothing more than offer dedication, hard work and support to enable me to grow my family.

Being able to give something back was a really important part of my journey. What I didn’t realise was that, in giving a little of my time, I would gain so much more from the experience.

Adoption Panel is such a pivotal moment in the lives of so many, and it is truly an honour to be part of that.

What do Adoption Panel Members do?

As panel members we meet once a month with one or two prospective adoptive families to recommend for approval.

We read the all-familiar PAR (Prospective Adopters Report) in advance and discuss and highlight things we would like to know more about.

We then meet the adopters online via Zoom and it is always a joy, being able to see them and ask a few questions, it really brings the PAR to life.

You get an insight into someone else’s world and learn so much about them, their families, backgrounds, struggles and celebrations.

After this, as a panel, we have a side meeting and make our recommendation, becoming a new reason to celebrate in the lives of our prospective adopters.

What have you found rewarding from being an Adoption Panel Member?

I joined panel earlier this year and one of the greatest rewards appeared in my inbox just this week! It was an update about some of the families I have met through panel.

Five of the families have found a match, in such a small amount of time, and I got to be a small part of making five new families.

The diversity of perspectives and experiences are so important on an Adoption Panel and are very much valued. It really is up there on the list of rewarding things that you can do!

What makes a great Adoption Panel Member?

• Listening and Communication
  Being a good listener and communicator is key. Panel members need to hear different perspectives and share their thoughts clearly and respectfully.
• Understanding Complex Information
  You’ll be reading detailed reports and hearing sensitive stories. It’s important to be able to take in all the information, think it through, and understand what it means for the child and the family.
• Making Thoughtful Judgements
  Panel members are asked to form opinions based on what they’ve read and heard. It’s not about having all the answers—it’s about using your judgement and being confident in sharing your views with others.
• Bringing Your Experience
  Your insight matters. Sharing your perspective helps the panel make well-rounded decisions.
• Teamwork
  Adoption panels are made up of people from different backgrounds. Working together respectfully and collaboratively is essential.
• Commitment and Reliability
  Panel members are expected to attend meetings on time and take part in at least one training session each year to stay informed and up to date.
